Just for the beginning, I have to admit I don't know much about animals. I can't tell if it was just sheep or even goats. Nor do I deny the existence of goat-sheep hybryds, what a mystery.
What makes this painting fascinating to me? Contrast. That black creature in the middle of the herd played right into my hands that day.
The plan to paint this grazing herd of "unseen" had been a long time coming, but it was not until the fourth visit that both the animals and the sun finally came out in a nice position. That's the interesting part, and much appreciated by me. The more difficult, the more valued. All our failures shape our successes.
